Seville is home to a group of monuments designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

These include the Real Alcázar of Seville, the Seville Cathedral, and the Archivo de Indias.

These are, therefore, the most important monuments and the ones you definitely shouldn’t miss during your visit.

Royal Alcázar

It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is considered the oldest royal palace in Europe still in use.

The Real Alcázar is a complex of palaces forming a sort of “palatial city” surrounded by walls and featuring its own vast gardens.

What makes the Alcázar of Seville unique is that it consists of several palaces located within the same complex: you’ll find Almohad, Mudejar, Gothic, Renaissance, Mannerist, and Neoclassical architecture—sometimes even within the same space.

It served as the setting for the Kingdom of Dorne in the famous series Game of Thrones.

Cathedral y Giralda

It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and holds the Guinness World Record for being the largest cathedral in the world.

It was the second-largest mosque in Al-Andalus, built as Seville’s main mosque and later converted into a cathedral.

Inside, it’s a vast museum filled with works of art: you’ll find the tombs of the kings who ruled Seville, King Saint Ferdinand’s banner, Emperor Charles V’s cloak, Alfonso X’s reliquary, and none other than the bones of Christopher Columbus himself.

Its bell tower is the symbol of Seville: the Giralda.

Archivo de Indias

It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987 and is the most important archive in the history of Spanish America.

Built as a merchants’ guildhall, it stands as a prime example of the power wielded by Seville’s merchants during the “Port of the Indies” period.

NNot only is the building itself a work of art, but it also houses much more than just documents. You’ll see cannons from Spanish shipwrecks, chests that once held silver, and rooms where Murillo painted.

It was designed by Juan de Herrera, the same architect who designed El Escorial.
