The Aljama Mosque, transformed into the largest Cathedral of its time
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987 and considered the largest cathedral in the world.
Why take this tour?
Because it’s not just another church. It’s an art museum, a mausoleum for kings and Christopher Columbus, a Guinness World Record holder for its size, a witness to the city’s history, and an artistic complex featuring Al-Andalus, Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, and Neoclassical art.
Because it’s not just about religion: within it, you’ll discover history, legends, devotional practices, and true works of art, such as the world’s largest altarpiece or paintings by Murillo and Goya. And all of this deserves to be explored in depth.
Why take this tour with me?
Unlike large group tours, you’ll have a professional guide all to yourself. It will be a more personalized tour, and you’ll be able to ask as many questions as you like, since I’ll be at your complete disposal.
You’ll be supporting high-quality, more sustainable tourism in Seville, while also ensuring that your guide has the historical knowledge needed to lead the tour.
The tour will last 2 hours, during which you’ll be able to enjoy the monument at your own pace without missing a thing—another key difference from group tours, which typically last 1 or 1.5 hours.
What you’ll do
- You’ll begin by learning about its origins as an aljama mosque and how it came to be converted into a cathedral, as well as the structural differences and unique features of the building. You’ll also see what remains of the original structure.
- We’ll take a comprehensive tour of the Gothic cathedral and each of its seven naves, exploring every chapel and its most notable works, so you don’t miss a single detail.
- Throughout these tours, we won’t just see liturgical objects or talk about religion: you’ll also discover the tombs of its most prominent figures, legends about the city’s patron saints, the devotion inspired by certain virgins in Seville, and other anecdotes about disasters that have occurred in the church.
- Finally, the cherry on top will be climbing the Giralda, the city’s symbol and the cathedral’s bell tower, where you’ll enjoy incredible views. And the best part is that there are no stairs—just ramps.
