Jocelyn Erskine-Kellie<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\">Just outside the city walls near the Puerta de Jerez, south of Seville, stood two large buildings: the Royal Tobacco Factory and the San Telmo Palace, with its vast gardens. <strong>But this area was changed forever by an event that marked a turning point in Seville\u2019s history: the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/portada-sevigliana.com-ver-jardines-m.luisa-wikipedia-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-140\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Photo: Wikipedia<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Expo &#8217;29 Venue<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Expo \u201992 sounds much more familiar to us, the one in \u201929 was actually just as impressive; Seville dressed up in its finest to welcome visitors from all over the world, aiming to become a city open to international tourism. <strong>The chosen location was the area surrounding Mar\u00eda Luisa Park, which had been owned by Mar\u00eda Luisa Fernanda de Borb\u00f3n (sister of Queen Isabel II) along with the San Telmo Palace.<\/strong> Mar\u00eda Luisa had bequeathed her private gardens to Seville\u2014hence the park\u2019s name\u2014and they served as the epicenter of the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery has-nested-images columns-default is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/entrada-sevigliana.com-ver-lugares-universidad-us.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"443\" src=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/entrada-sevigliana.com-ver-lugares-universidad-us-1024x532.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-443\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/alfonso-xiii-marriot.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2592\" src=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/alfonso-xiii-marriot-1024x412.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2592\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/san-telmo-gavilansevilla-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-id=\"2593\" src=\"https:\/\/gavilansevilla.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/07\/san-telmo-gavilansevilla-1024x833.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2593\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-right\" style=\"font-size:10px\">Photos. left: Universidad de Sevilla; center: Marriot; right: Wikipedia<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Today, the area is a very pleasant place to stroll, where you can still see the pavilions of the different countries that participated<\/strong>, the most famous of which is the Spanish Pavilion (Plaza de Espa\u00f1a). <strong>Of course, the luxurious Hotel Alfonso XIII<\/strong>\u2014also built for the exposition\u2014catches the eye; it\u2019s impossible to miss. Afterward, you can\u2019t leave Seville without visiting <strong>Mar\u00eda Luisa Park<\/strong>, which is the city\u2019s largest and most beautiful park, filled with fountains, small monuments, and little islands where birds and ducks gather\u2026 a must-see par excellence. You\u2019ll arrive at <strong>Plaza de Am\u00e9rica<\/strong>, home to beautiful buildings such as the Museum of Popular Arts and Traditions and the Archaeological Museum. Next to it, on the <strong>Paseo de las Delicias<\/strong>, you\u2019ll find the pavilions of the Ibero-American countries, such as those of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, and Morocco; and, heading back toward the city center, those of Peru, Chile, Uruguay, and Portugal.
