The Alameda de H\u00e9rcules owes its name to the Roman columns representing Hercules and Julius Caesar. Originally a marshland, it was redeveloped in the 16th century, becoming Europe\u2019s first public garden. The destruction of the rest of the walls and all their gates was a decision made by the local government to \u201cmodernize\u201d the city in the 19th century. This site was once part of the Colegio de San Miguel, administered by the Cathedral. Originally, there were six columns, two of which are located on the Alameda de H\u00e9rcules. Although it was merely a small guardhouse for the park keeper, legend has it that Queen Mar\u00eda de las Mercedes used to sew while sunbathing here as she waited for visits from her fianc\u00e9, Alfonso XII.
