It was built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exposition to represent Spain, which is why its real name is \u201cPavilion of Spain&#8221;. Built by the Almohads in 1224, its original purpose was to protect the river. Its Renaissance Plateresque fa\u00e7ade features symbols such as the NO8DO emblem, the <em>Plus Ultra<\/em> motto, and representations of Hercules and Julius Caesar. This 17th-century former hospice for \u201cvenerable priests\u201d (hence the name) is definitely worth a visit. Today, it also serves as the Vel\u00e1zquez Center, so you can admire works by the artist and the spectacular church all within a single monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left has-small-font-size\"><em>Temporarily closed.
